"The Modern History of China" began with the onset of the Sino-British Opium War of 1840 to the collapse of the Kuomintang regime of Nanjing in 1949 and the subsequent founding of the P.R.C. Incorporating the late Qing Dynasty, and the periods of the Provisional Government of the Republic of China, the Warlords of Northern China, and the National Government, this history featured the gradual collapse of the semi-colonial and semi-feudal society of China.
